Those of television viewing age during the decade between September 1977 to May 1986 will likely quickly remember the words: “Love, exciting and new Come Aboard. We’re expecting you. Love, life’s sweetest reward. Let it flow, it floats back to you. Love Boat soon will be making another run The Love Boat promises something for everyone” THE IMPACT OF THE LOVE BOAT It was during this decade that the cruise vacation industry perhaps got its biggest promotional boost as “The Love Boat” sailed its way into the top 10 most popular shows on TV during that period. Cruise industry executives often credit the top-rated show for igniting a multi-year boom in cruise vacation bookings. Offering an hour-long comedy escape, the show depicted fictional passengers and crew involved in adventures and romances at sea. It truly set the standards for the high level of celebration vacation one can enjoy on a cruise vacation. THE LOVE BOATS DEMISE It was therefore, with some sadness, that we learned today that the original Pacific Princess (which the show had been staged upon) has made its final voyage to a scrapyard in Turkey where it will be dismantled for its metal and parts. Couples who might have been hoping to embark on a honeymoon or wedding travel vacation on the ship would have found it tiny by today’s standards at only 600-passengers. In fact, because of changing industry standards, the last cruise vacation the ship hosted was several years ago under the Spanish based Quail Cruises flag – after Princess Cruises had sold it in 2002. Since that time the ship had been languishing at a dock in Genoa, Italy for several years. HOW TO KEEP THE LOVE BOAT MEMORIES ALIVE For those seeking some nostalgic memories, Princess does still sail a new Pacific Princess as part of their Small Ships of Princess fleet.
