Whether you are a skier or a boarder, one thing that seems likely is that you are focused and competitive and have a higher capacity for Adrenaline filled activities then the average person. You are likely someone who appreciates Health and Wellness, and perhaps has a higher than average interest in travel to experience new resorts and mountain side experiences. To you, nothing beats a day on the slopes for the snow, the thrills and perhaps the incredible views! At home and on the road you may also have a love for technology and may desire ways to harness your technical interests to display your expertise on the slopes. Fear not! RESORTS GO HIGH TECH Ski resorts (in  both Colorado and other locales) embraced technology long ago and every season resorts try to one up themselves with new technology that will both “wow” and please you! Today, not only can you share photos of yourself schussing down the slopes in expert fashion but you can also track your runs, vertical feet skied, spot yourself on the slope with Google Maps or compete with ski expert Lindsey Vonn! No matter where you travel, thanks to today’s technology you can not only experience the health and wellness benefits of skiing and boarding but also impress both your friends (and perhaps yourself) as you track your daily activities on the slope! While each resort offers different applications for their technology some of the more unique ones we have discovered at Colorado resorts include: STEAMBOAT Mountainwatch at Steamboat Springs ski resort keeps track of your kids as they participate in ski school. If a student wanders an alarm goes off to alert the ski staff. Lost? The technology helps the ski staff quickly locate the wayward participant. Perhaps to the child’s disappointment it also provides a summary of the day’s runs. This allows the ski staff, or parent, to fact check juniors claims when they brag about slopes they may not have ever been on. WINTER PARK GPS capability at Winter Park ski resort allows you to track your runs and how much vertical you did as well as your average and top speeds. ASPEN / SNOWMASS Broader GPS capabilities at Aspen / Snowmass ski resort will provide you with GPS enabled trail maps. Not sure where you are? Call up a trail map and your precise location will appear. Utilizing Google’s street view feature you can even see in photographs where you are. Also at Aspen / Snowmass radio frequency identification chips (RFID) embedded in your pass can now clock you in as a registered guest or add additional days to your day pass just by walking through the turnstile. As the RFID also contains your credit card information you can also buy meals and more with your pass. VAIL Not to be outdone, Vail Resorts also offer RFID technology with many of the same features as Aspen / Snowmass. However they also add in award “pins” to users for accomplishing different achievements. This appeals to those looking for some friendly competition with others. Speaking of competition, using Vail’s EpicMix Racing application, Vail guests also have the opportunity to see how they stack up against world class skier Lindsey Vonn and share their race times, digital medals, overall leader boards and leader boards with family and friends. At the end of the season top people with the most qualifying times will be able to compete in championships at Beaver Creek! Using EpicMix Racing, skiers and snowboarders can try their skill running gates on a race course and automatically have their times compared to Lindsey, with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded based on achievement! EpicMix Racing is currently available at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone in Colorado and Heavenly and Northstar in California and Nevada As you can see, today’s skiing experience is a far cry from the 1850’s when ski pioneer Sondre Norheim first entwined shoots of birch tree root to create heal straps making possible modern downhill skiing. With technology, your ski or boarding vacation can truly become an interactive experience for you! Whether it’s to show off your invincible skills on the slope, or simply keep track of your kids, a travel experience to today’s winter resorts not only provides health and wellness benefits but also can offer you a whole lot of fun simply through technological applications! We at Travel N Relax look forward to helping you discover the perfect resort for your technological desires and helping you plan that ideal winter escape that combines the ideal mix of fitness, relaxation and fun!
